Entrance to The Secrets of The Little Man

Les Secrets du Petit Bonhomme

One of the highlights of my trip to Europe was being able to attend Les Secrets du Petit Bonhomme or translated: The Secrets of the Little Man. If you are a champagne lover this is a MUST. It was a two day event featuring small, local champagne houses in Rilly-la-Montagne.

This was the 5th edition of the tasting of small champagne houses. The quaint little village called Rilly-la-Montagne is about a 12 minute train ride from Reims, France. This year the event took place on July 20th and July 21st 2024. *6th edition- The event will take place July 19th and July 20th 2025* The tasting consisted of 23 different small champagne houses participating and giving samples of various champagnes. Each house was very different in how they set up the tasting and what the feel was like. Some places you simply walked up and got a taste of champagne and a short explanation, while other houses took you down into their cellars and showed you where they stored champagne. This made for a very fun day because each place felt completely different.

Getting there is very convenient with direct trains from 3 major train stations in the area:

  • Paris to Rilly-la-Montagne: TGV Train- this is France’s high speed train and the quickest/easiest way to get to the tasting from Paris. This ride is approximately 1 hour and 4 minutes.
  • Reims to Rilly-la-Montagne: TER Train- this is France’s regional train that connects cities to country sides. This is a quick 12 minute train ride from Reims.
  • Epernay to Rilly-la-Montagne: TER Train- a 20 minute train ride from Epernay.
